Environmental Conference of Representatives of the Parliament of Asia-Pacific

Tehran, Dec 12, 2019 (ICANA) – Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Reza Tabesh referred to measures taken by Iran with regard to preserving the environment, saying fighting climate changes requires an international determination.

Tabesh made the remarks addressing the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Conference on Environment and Development (APPCED) held in Seoul. The Islamic Parliament of Iran considers APPCED as an opportunity to discuss various aspects of climate change, to enhance existing regional capacities and to promote synergy between countries with regard to improving the environment, he said.

Undoubtedly, the importance of climate changes, continuous challenges, reinforcing cooperation between Asia and Pacific states and creating capacity have made lawmakers to achieve good conditions in the region by fighting climate change, preserving maritime eco-systems, lagoons, achieving peaceful societies and increasing international participation, he added.

Due to the fact that Iran is located in a region with arid and semi-arid climate and despite climate change vulnerability resulting in water resources fall, increasing air pollution, drought and drying up of wetlands and ultimately increasing areas influenced by the dust, it has always tried to take preventive measures against the spread of these damages by adopting all available tools and technologies.

Unfortunately, environment has also become victim of sanctions, he said adding that sanctions are regarded as a pretext for stopping developing countries to adopt new technologies and funding for climate action in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Imposition of cruel sanctions and its negative impacts on the environment has resulted in climate change, water tension, food tension and spread of dust and air pollution, he reiterated. Elsewhere in his remarks, Tabesh referred to rapid and suitable measure taken by the Iranian government with regard to reviving Urmia Lake.

He also referred to ratification of laws with regard to soil protection, clean air, Law on the Sixth Five-Year Economic, Cultural, and Social Development Plan, Minamata Convention, Curbing Mercury Use, preserving and using Iran’s genetic resources, protecting park rangers and the Protocol for the Conservation of Biological Diversity to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea as measures taken by Iran to protect the environment.
